Furniture polishing or finishing covers a wide range of different materials and methods of application. The purpose of polishing is to protect the wood and to bring out the beauty and lustre of the grain and colour. Lightening or colouring is done at the finishing stage. This is were you can choose the colour to suit you or we can advise you what is suitable for your piece of furniture.
Probably the best known traditional polish is ‘French Polish’ which is a polishing method rather than an actual finish. The material used is shellac, made from the shellac beetle and their dung (they are not killed but have a life cycle). It has been used in this country for over two hundred years and in China and Japan much longer. French polishing gives furniture a deep shine that enhances, magnifies the grain and colour of the wood beneath. With older pieces of furniture the final finish is dulled to give a slightly aged look using pumice powder, fine steel wool and other fine abrasives.
Hard wax oil finishes are often used in areas of heavy wear. Treatex hard wax oil is suitable for food preparation areas (kitchen worktops etc), children’s toys and cots. Some are suitable for outside use.
Lacquer, Polyurethane and Acrylic are other finishes we use, they all have their own properties and reasons to use.
Wax is not usually a finish in its own right but is applied on top of finishes or seals to enhance, protect and clean the item.
